An unprepared future mother needs your help

Alright experienced mother and sisters (and fathers!) I need your help. A friend in my ward wants to throw me a baby shower and she suggested registering some where so guests have an idea of what I need. The problem is that I have no idea what I need! So first of all, where would you suggest registering? And what would you suggest registering for? What are the must haves, or things you did not have that you wish you had? Also, what are things that you would NOT register for? What are all the unnecessary items that stores try to get you to buy that are really just that, unnecessary? Or what are the things that you automatically always get a ton of and don't need to register for even more? And what are the things that you don't need to register for but you would suggest us buying ourselves? Basically any advice would help. We are coming up on the '3 months left' mark and it is a little nerve racking how little preparing we have actually done. August just seems so far away still, but I am sure it will come fast! So, thanks for all your help and support!

  1. Corn: don't worry about the crib and craddle. Ty's sister is giving us her crib because they are done with it. I may borrow the mattress that is at mom's house though, just to make the bed a little higher so I don't have to bend over as much to put the baby in, unless the crib is adjustable, I don't know how they work. I guess we will see once we get it in the house. Thanks for your list! There were several things I had not thought of. Let me know if any more come to mind.

  2. One thing we had to buy the first week was Baby nail clippers! Their little nails are already grown out when they are born and they grow so fast. Another piece of advice, I would have the girl that's throwing you the shower to put "Please have gift receipts for any clothing items you buy" on the invitations. That way you can easily take back clothes for the wrong gender, if you get any. This isn't necessary, but we LOVE our noise maker for Porter. I wish I had it sooner because Porter was a very light sleeper as a new born. You'd open the front door and he would wake up! Corinne mostly covered it all. Here are just a few more I can think of:

    nail clippers
    thermometer (to check body temp)
    infant wash tub
    infant towels
    swaddling blankets
    swing
    baby monitor
    crib sheets
    changing table, pad, and cover
    bouncer
    baby carrier
    noise maker ?
baby gate? (since you have long narrow steps) won't need right away obviously

If I think of more i'll let you know!

  3. This is wonderful! Thank you! Heather will you remind me what it was you said you had? I know you said you had a boppy and a breast pump. Did you say you had an infant wash tub too? I can't remember

  4. Also! Does it matter what kind of baby wash, lotion, wipes and everything that you buy or is the cheap stuff ok? Basically, what stuff would you not buy cheap? And what brand would you suggest?

  5. Diapers and wipes come by personal preference. You might as well try different brands and see what you like best. I really like the Costco brand diapers. For a newborn, pampers swaddlers I think I liked. But we don't like the pampers wipes. Costco and huggies are brands we use. As for lotion and baby wash....some say the cheap stuff don't do much But make the baby smell good. But my kids survived it. :)

  6. Heather! What day should we have Whit's shower? Whit, would a Saturday or evening be best?

  7. We are still working out the details of our trip this summer, but it looks like the beginning of July would be best for the shower.

    1. Something else I just thought of...get sleepers with a zipper not buttons or snaps. Wish I would have known this. Snaps can take so long, especially with a kicking baby and can get frustrating in the middle of the night when you just want to go back to sleep!

  9. I think a Saturday would probably work best. I know mom wanted to invited Ty's family to the family shower so I think a Saturday would be best for them to travel down, I will ask them.

  10. It looks like the first Sat of July is the 5th though and that is our weekend for the cabin. Maybe we could the Sat before or the Sat after.

  11. Sorry to bring this up again but Ty's mom was wondering about the date for the shower so she can schedule when to come out here. She works at the temple so she needs to know asap so she can get someone to cover her shifts. Any thoughts?

  12. Is it better for Ty's family if it is on a weekend or can it be during the week days?

  13. A weekend would be best for them but I am sure they would try and work it out whenever it is so you do what is best for you.
